Influenza Immunisation - Flu Vaccine Now Available for 2014 Flu Season

2014 Flu Shot Available from 15 March

The Government funded Flu vaccine for 2014 has just arrived at Collins Street Medical Centre. The stock we have received is the CSL brand FLUVAX.

The strains that are covered for the 2014 flu season are:
  • an A/Texas 50/2012 (H3N2) -like virus
  • an A/California 7/2009 (H1N1) -like virus
  • a B/ Massachusetts 2/2012-like virus

2014 Flu Shot Available

People who at high risk of complications from influenza are eligible for a free flu vaccine are:

  • 65 years and older
  • pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15yrs and over
  • residents of nursing homes
  • any person over 6mths of age with predisposing conditions ie. cardiac, chronic respiratory, Down syndrome, Immunocompromising conditions, diabetes, metabolic disorders, chronic neurological conditions, renal disease, haematological disorders.

New Visiting Consultant - Gynaecologist & Fertility Specialist Dr Anne Poliness

Collins Street Medical Centre is very pleased to welcome Gynaecologist & Fertility Specialist, Dr Anne Poliness as a visiting specialist to our clinic.

Dr Anne Poliness MBBS, FRANZCOG, MMed (Reprod), MD will be commence consulting sessions and be available for patient appointments on alternate Monday afternoons, beginning Monday 20th January, 2014.

Life Membership of the AAPM awarded to CSMC's Practice Manager

The staff of Collins Street Medical Centre were delighted to see our Practice Manager Brett McPherson receive a Life Membership of the AAPM, one of only 7 ever awarded, for extraordinary service to the AAPM as past President, current Board Member and representative on many National committees.

Brett accepted his Life Membership award at the Sydney Convention Centre during the International Health Care Conference, Sydney 2013, a joint conference of The Australian Association of Practice Managers Ltd (AAPM) and Quality Innovation Performance (QIP).

Practices were asked to showcase their most recent achievement in the areas of safety and quality, innovation or excellence in consumer engagement that occurred during the nomination period (2011 - 2012).

A judging panel is currently reviewing the finalist nominations against each award category's specific criteria. Nominations received have been outstanding and are testament to general practice’s commitment to quality improvement.

Staff from CSMC are flying to Sydney for the event and Gala Dinner which is judged on the 27th of September.


CSMC Welcomes New GP Dr Coniela Sgroi

CSMC is delighted to welcome Dr Coniela Sgroi to our practice. She is a highly experienced General Practitioner who has worked in Melbourne's inner city .

Dr Coniela Sgroi

Dr Coniela Sgroi graduated from Monash University in 2001 and obtained her Fellowship in General Practice in 2008.

Coniela has a Diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She is currently undertaking the Diploma of Child Health with The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

Coniela is qualified for shared obstetric care through The Royal Women’s Hospital and The Mercy Hospital for Women. She is also qualified to insert the Implanon contraceptive device.

Coniela is passionate about providing thorough care and working with her patients. She enjoys empowering them with knowledge and guiding them to achieve optimal health.

Local practice educates community about quality in health care

Collins Street Medical Centre, located in the heart of Melbourne, features in a national community awareness campaign.

The campaign aims to educate the public on how general practice accreditation can support the delivery of quality and safe health care for patients.

Collins Street  Medical Centre staff worked with Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL) to produce the campaign. AGPAL is a not-for-profit organisation comitted to delivering accreditation and quality improvement services to general practices throughout Australia.

Collins Street Medical Centre has been participating the AGPAL accreditation program since 2003, accredited against the RACGP Standards for general practices. The Medical Centre has achieved a number of awards throughout the years including, the 2010 AGPAL Quality Innovation Award and 2007 AGPAL Practice Excellence Award.

AGPAL Ambassador Practice

Collins Street Medical Centre is now proud to be an AGPAL Ambassador Practice, promoting the benefits of accreditation to the community.

Mr Brett McPherson, Practice Manager, said it is important for patients to know their practice is committed to continuous quality impovement to improve patient safety and quality of care.

Collins Street Medical Centre sees many young, time-poor professionals as patients, making it  important for the practice to be at the forefront of general practice in Australia.

Bowel Cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in Australia with a risk 1 in 12 people.

National Bowel Cancer Screening Program

However, bowel cancer screening is still not being performed optimally.

To combat this Collins Street Medical Centre has joined with the Inner North West Melbourne Medicare Local Cancer Screening Program.

Screening using an immunochemical faecal occult blood test (FOBT) is recommended every 1-2 years for people aged 50 or over.


Flu Vaccine and Influenza

There have been 41,336 notifications of Influenza in Australia since March 2012 with 13% or 5443 cases being in Victoria. There are many more cases than notifications as often people may not seek medical attention or are not routinely tested for influenza when they present.

Australia and Victoria has an extended influenza season with cases still occurring. With global travel continuing to increase influenza can be a risk Western union money transfer at any time.

The Royal Women’s has notified us of 7 pregnant women who were admitted with influenza in the last week in September and are encouraging us to vaccinate all pregnant women not previously vaccinated to receive their free vaccine. Babies receive 6 month immunity from their Mother’s influenza vaccine.

Influenza A has been the main circulating virus while the proportion of Influenza B is now increasing.

The 2012 vaccine contains A/California/2009(H1n1), A/Perth/2009(h3N2) and B/Brisbane/2008 like strain.

Those at high risk who can receive the free flu vaccine include:

  • Everyone over 65
  • Indigenous people aged 15 and over
  • Pregnant women at any stage in their pregnancy
  • Any person over 6 months with
    • Cardiac disease
    • Chronic respiratory disease including asthma
    • Chronic renal or liver disease
    • Diabetes Mellitus
    • Chronic Metabolic Disease
    • Immunosuppression including cancer, HIV , immunosuppressive medications
    • Chronic neurological disorders

Travel Medicine - Yellow Fever Vaccinations

Accredited Australian Government - Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre.

Collins Street Medical Centre is an approved a government accredited vaccination centre for Yellow Fever.

Prospective travellers will require a consultation with one of our GPs to review their medical history, risk of exposure, country vaccination requirements (for all countries being visited / transited) in line with the guidelines and requirements from the most recent NHMRC Australia Immunisation Handbook.

Where the Yellow Fever vaccine is given, the practice will provide the required certificate:

“International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis.”
