Antenatal and Shared Care

Antenatal and Pregnancy CareDr Fiona Broderick, Dr Manjit Kala and Dr Amanda Nuttingare experienced GP's who are accredited to provide Shared Antenatal Care with the Royal Women's, Mercy Maternity, Northern and Sunshine Hospitals. They enjoy providing this service and find it very rewarding.

Shared Antenatal Care enables women to be seen regularly by their Doctor of choice who is familiar with their medical history. It reduces the number of Hospital visits and waiting times at Hospital Outpatient Clinics.

A shared antenatal record is completed by the GP and Hospital and it is important to bring this to each visit.

It is important to inform Reception Staff that a shared antenatal consultation is required when booking an appointment.

Our experienced Practice Nurses also see antenatal patients prior to the Doctor.

Certain medical conditions such as diabetes may mean that women are not suitable for shared antenatal care.

Pre Pregnancy and Early Pregnancy Care

It is helpful to make a double appointment for pre pregnancy advice. At this consultation, pathology is taken for antenatal screens, immunisations are updated, family history taken for genetic counselling and advice given on pregnancy vitamins and lifestyle changes requires.

A double appointment is also important when confirming pregnancy. At this consultation referrals are given for first trimester maternal serum screening and Hospital and Specialist referrals. We have an excellent referral base for Radiology Services expert in antenatal diagnostic screening.

Women are seen monthly until week 30, each two weeks from week 30 to 36 and weekly thereafter.
Hospital visits usually occur for an initial assessment and then at week 28, 36 and 41.

The initial GP appointment is 30 minutes and then may be 15-30 minutes thereafter with the Practice nurse seeing women first.

Post Natal Review

There is a 6 week post natal review with a 30 minute appointment for the woman and a 15 minute appointment for the baby.

The baby's appointment can be bulk billed if the new Medicare card is available.

It is very important to bring the baby's Health and Development Book (Green book) along to every appointment so that data such as height, weight and vaccinations can be added to our records.
