New and improved pneumococcal vaccine

Childhood immunisations - pneumococcal vaccinePneumococcal disease is the name of a range of illnesses caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae and can cause blood and brain infections such as meningitis.

A new and improved pneumococcal vaccine is now available. The pneumococcal vaccine is routinely given at 2, 4 and 6 months and from 1 July 2011 the new vaccine called Prevenar 13® has been used in Victoria.

Prevenar 13® protects against 13 strains including 19A which has caused 20% of recent notifications in Victoria.
